Why This Workflow?

Standard AI-generated UIs often look functional but lack polish - spacing feels off, colors don’t harmonize, and the overall design lacks that professional touch. The v0 model changes this completely, generating UIs with proper spacing, typography, and color schemes that actually look like they were designed by a professional.

Setup v0 in Cursor

You’ll need a Vercel Pro plan or higher to use v0’s API - but it’s worth it for crisp, professional designs in one shot.

Configure the API endpoint

  • Go to Cursor Settings → Models
  • In “OpenAI Base URL”, enter: api.v0.dev/v1
  • Save the settings

Generate your API key

  • Visit v0.dev → Settings
  • Generate an API key
You need to be on the v0 Pro plan or higher to generate an API key.
  • Paste it into Cursor’s OpenAI API key field
  • Click Verify

Important toggle behavior

  • When using v0: Turn ON the OpenAI API key toggle
  • When using Claude: Turn OFF the OpenAI API key toggle
  • This prevents conflicts between models

The Workflow

Start with v0 for foundation screens

  • Select GPT-4o model (with OpenAI API key ON)
  • Ask v0 to build ONE page at a time (e.g., “Make a beautiful calendar event app - just the main calendar view”)
  • v0 excels at UI but can struggle with complex app scaffolding, so keep requests focused

Switch to Claude or Gemini 2.5 Pro models for functionality

  • Once you have your beautiful foundation UI
  • Turn OFF the OpenAI API key
  • Switch to Claude 4 or Gemini 2.5 Pro
  • Ask the agent to add features, additional screens, and complex logic
  • Claude/Gemini will naturally follow the design patterns v0 established

Return to v0 for new screens

When you need another screen design (or just want to update the UI in any way)
  • Switch back to v0 (GPT-4o with API key ON)
  • Generate the new screen
  • Return to Claude for integration and functionality
